Don’t
· Distract others or prevent them from taking part

If you don’t follow the rules…
· You will be warned by one of the Scout Leaders
· If you ignore this warning, you will be sent from the Scout Hall and miss the next game or activity (a yellow card)
· If, on returning to the Scout Hall, you continue to misbehave you will be sent from the Hall again (a second yellow card)
· Any Scout who receives two yellow cards in one night will be given a red card and excluded from the following Scout night (including any outdoor activities) and their parents informed of the reason for this.
Miskin Camp Report September 2006.
Scouting started with a camp this term. The Troop returned to Miskin Scout Village, scene of the District Camp and (almost) legendary Area ‘Ready Steady Cook’ competition in July. This time we went alone, sharing the site with the St Melons cub pack, who for some reason kept well away from us…
The camp was a great success and gave the Scouts (and leaders?) the chance to showcase their many and varied talents. The camp followed the traditional format, with the Scouts arriving Friday evening, putting the tents up very quickly and then disappearing into the woods, only returning when offered bribes of food, in this case hamburgers cooked by Rod ‘Dafydd’ Lloyd, the camp cook to beat all others. If only we could put those pictures on the website…
Saturday saw more traditional Scouting activities. We built a raft from pioneering poles and barrels. It even actually floated, which given that there was little more than 20 cm of water in the river was no mean achievement. Saturday also saw the District canoeing competition, also held at Miskin. The complete lack of water meant that only the lightest of canoeist stood any chance at all, but Peter Edmonds, Chris Lloyd, Tristan Danks and Sam Cawte all volunteered at short notice to take part. Much to everyone’s surprise (particularly the defending champion and organiser’s daughter) Pete ‘the Paddle’ Edmonds came second overall, so well done to him.
Saturday afternoon was spent crossing the river. Not the most exciting activity you might think, but when you realise that we crossed the river suspended from a rope, carrying firewood and dragged by teams of Scouts, you can see how it might be more interesting. The tension was particularly acute for the larger members of the group whose extra weight meant that they dragged the rope down just that little bit closer to the water.
Saturday night was campfire night. Due to the number of pyromaniacs on site we actually had a choice of fires to sit around, but eventually chose the one created by Patrol A (Patrol B’s was just a bit too hot). After toasting some marshmallows, we got on with some serious campfire singing. David ‘the Voice’ Roberts led the way with some classic Max Boyce while Ben ‘Strummer’ Evans provided the chords for the more contemporary numbers, the most popular being Tribute by Tenacious D. Just imagine it sung by a dozen scouts, most of whom had to take their shirts off whilst running around and you get the general idea. After all this, the leaders needed a drink. And then another one!
Sunday dawned somewhat later than Saturday, sleep helped by the lack of trains. After another splendid breakfast from the camp cooks, we went for 10 km hike around Llantrisant, taking in the Hill Fort and explosives depot, returning to Miskin just in time to eat the remaining cakes, pack up the tents and hand the boys back to their parents.
Rumour has it that everyone went to bed very early on Sunday evening.

Basic Hiking Kit Requirements – Part 1
For a basic “Night Hike”, or a single day in the hills, you will need the following essential items, as you are responsible for your own comfort:
1. Rucksack: Day sack circa 25L – 35L with a bin liner for added waterproof protection
2. Walking Boots and good socks
3. Walking trousers: should be loose fitting and able to dry easily (NO JEANS)
4. Trunk: Wear layers on the top so that you can easily take them off or add them as you get hot or cold
5. Warm Hat & Gloves
6. Waterproofs: Waterproof jacket with integral hood Waterproof over trousers
7. “Ouch Pack” (your basic personal first aid kit to include plasters, blister plasters, wound dressing, tweezers, etc)
8. Whistle
9. Torch & spare batteries
10. Exposure Bag
11. Spare warm clothing i.e. fleece, sweat shirt.
12. Personal drink & snacks e.g. Chocolate or sweets
Note:The leaders always carry spare warm clothing, food, First Aid Kits and emergency shelters, which will be equally distributed amongst the troop to carry. Don’t Forget: Whatever you bring, you carry!!!
Hiking Kit Requirements - Part 2
Overnight Camping For a day and night in the hills you will be carrying all of your personal equipment and sharing tents, stoves, fuel and food. The Group normally supplies this. All of your equipment should be inside your rucksack with the exception of your sleeping mat, which normally sits outside. Your hands should be free from equipment
1. Basic Hiking Kit Requirements – Part 1
2. Packed lunch for first day
3. Rucksack 45-55L with a liner for protection (plastic rubble sacks are excellent for this)
4. Sleeping Bag 2 – 3 season plus a liner if required.
5. Compression Bag to compress sleeping bag down
6. Sleeping Mat Foam roll or inflatable type
7. Mess tins, Mug and knife, fork & spoon We can provide mess tins if required
8. Water Bottle (no more than 1L)
9. Matches & some Toilet Paper
10. Spare clothes to include socks, pants, shirt and trousers to be kept in a waterproof bag. (Black bin liner is ideal)
Hint: It is much easier when your clothes are rolled to fit them in and they stay crease proof
NOTE
Please remember to pack your own rucksack, as you need to know where everything is, in which compartment and not to carry unnecessary weight.
